Former Chief Minister Shanta Kumar, in a letter addressed to Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, today urged him to order reinvestigation into the Gudiya rape and murder case, which rocked the state at one time. Gudiya, a schoolgirl, was raped and murdered in upper Shimla four years ago; her mutilated body was found in a forest but the state police and the CBI failed to arrest the real culprits.
Shanta said that the CBI investigation did not reach its logical end and the family of the victim did not get justice. Therefore, the government must go for a fresh probe for the satisfaction of the aggrieved family.

He said that the government should constitute an SIT comprising four retired Director Generals of Police along with serving police officers in consultation with Leader of the Opposition Mukesh Agnihotri. He suggested to the government to request the HP High Court to monitor the investigation so that facts could come to light.
The former Chief Minister said that earlier the state police mishandled the case and hence it was handed over to the CBI at a very later stage. However, by that time all evidence had been destroyed. “People of the state are not satisfied with the probe. They have doubts about its veracity, as the CBI had concluded that there was only one accused but two officers of the Gujarat Forensic Department had said that the number of accused could be more than one. Gudiya’s family members and the people at large do not trust the outcome of the CBI investigation,” he added.
Shanta said that right from the beginning, Gudiya’s family members maintained that the investigation was not moving in the right direction and efforts were being made to save the culprits.
