Shoe-hurling a disgraceful act, says Mandi lawyers union

The All India Lawyers Union (AILU), Mandi unit, has strongly condemned and protested the disgraceful incident of shoe-throwing at the Chief Justice of India, Justice BR Gavai in the Chief Justice’s Court of the Supreme Court of India on October 6.

In a memorandum addressed to the President of India, the AILU termed the act as a direct assault on the dignity and independence of the judiciary and an attack on the spirit of the Constitution of India.

While expressing deep anguish, the AILU emphasised that the right to dissent cannot be misused to indulge in acts of disrespect towards constitutional institutions. The union observed that such conduct brought shame to the entire legal fraternity and tarnished the dignity of the profession.

Calling upon all sections of society, especially the legal community, Deepak Azad, president of the AILU, Mandi unit, urged citizens to stand united in defence of the Constitution, the judiciary and democratic values. The union appealed for peaceful and democratic protest against such reprehensible acts.

He called upon the entire legal fraternity to collectively condemn and resist such undemocratic behaviour. “This is not merely an attack on a person or an institution; it is an attack on the very soul of the Indian Constitution,” said Povinder Kumar, secretary, AILU Mandi unit.
