Solang Nala set for makeover under eco-tourism initiative

Solang Nala, a prominent tourist destination 13 km from Manali, is set for a significant makeover under an eco-tourism initiative. The Forest Department has proposed a Rs 3 crore plan to enhance the spot’s appeal, known for skiing, paragliding, zorbing, snow scooters, horse riding and other adventure activities. A 5-minute ropeway ride to Phatru at 3,300 metres adds to its attractions.

Kullu Divisional Forest Officer Angel Chauhan announced plans to rejuvenate the skiing slope and build separate paths for horse rides and a track to the religious site Anjani Mahadev, accessible to horse riders. Improved tracks for ATVs and snow scooters are also part of the project. Fencing and expanded parking facilities will enhance visitor convenience.

Solang Nala, a picturesque grassland surrounded by dense pine forests and high peaks, attracts lakhs of tourists annually, especially in winter when the slopes are blanketed in snow. Located on the Manali-Leh highway, the area remains a year-round favourite for travellers.

The Tourism Department has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for FCA clearance to further develop the Solang Special Area. Plans include an eco-friendly vending zone at Solang Nala’s ground.

The upgrades, guided by directives from the National Green Tribunal and the High Court, aim to improve tourist facilities while preserving the area’s natural beauty. With these developments, Solang Nala is poised to offer an enhanced experience for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
