Soon, Shimla MC to launch helpline for debris collection
To promote cleanliness in Shimla, the Municipal Corporation is set to launch a helpline for the doorstep collection of construction and demolition waste. Residents can avail of this service by dialing 1916 or contacting the corporation via WhatsApp at 9805201916. A nominal fee will be charged for the service.
Once a request is received, the corporation will dispatch vehicles to collect the debris and garbage, which will then be transported to the waste-to-energy plant in Bharyal village, located about 14 km from Shimla. This initiative was proposed in the 2024-25 budget to ensure proper disposal of demolition waste. The corporation will send pickups or tippers to designated locations, charging a fee for the service.
Illegal dumping of debris, especially in the town’s forests, has become a major issue. Many residents dump waste at night, threatening the environment and increasing the risk of disasters during heavy rains. To curb this, the corporation has begun imposing fines on offenders. With the introduction of this debris collection service, illegal dumping is expected to decrease significantly.
Additionally, the corporation is developing dedicated dumping sites to further facilitate proper waste disposal. This initiative is a step towards a cleaner and more sustainable Shimla.
