Soon, state-of-the-art girls’ hostel to come up at Nahan PG College

In a significant step towards enhancing educational infrastructure, one of Himachal Pradesh’s oldest government colleges, Dr Yashwant Singh Parmar Government Postgraduate College, Nahan, is set to receive a state-of-the-art girls’ hostel.

This comes as excellent news for female students from remote areas of Sirmaur district who seek higher education at this prestigious institution.

The ambitious Rs 9.50 crore project has officially commenced within the college campus in Yashwant Vihar Colony, marking a major development in student welfare. All tendering processes have been completed, and an initial instalment of Rs 50 lakh has been released to Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), which is overseeing the construction.

The project holds special significance, as only two colleges in the state — in Nahan and Chamba — have been selected in the first phase of the Prime Minister’s Higher Education Scheme for hostel construction. The Dr Y S Parmar PG College, Nahan, has been a centre of academic excellence for over 50 years and is among the oldest colleges in the state.

While the college currently operates a temporary girls’ hostel in the Amar Boarding Building, near the Zila Parishad building, it can accommodate only 55 students. Moreover, the institution lacks a boys’ hostel, which once operated in Villa Round, but has now turned into a ruin.

Given the increasing student population and the rising cost of private accommodations, the new hostel will be a boon for female students, providing them with a safe and affordable housing option.

The college administration has successfully obtained approvals from the Forest Department, Jal Shakti Department, Electricity Board and Nahan Municipal Council, ensuring smooth progress for the project. Dr Premraj Bhardwaj, Principal of PG College, Nahan, confirmed that all formalities have been completed, and construction is now underway.

The new girls’ hostel will not only provide a safe and comfortable living space, but also encourage more female students from rural and remote areas to pursue higher education. This initiative aligns with the government’s vision of improving higher education infrastructure and promoting women’s empowerment through education.
