Targeted awareness campaigns across Himachal Pradesh have begun to show tangible results, with women’s participation in the electoral process registering a clear rise. The state’s voter gender ratio has improved from 981 to 983 women voters per 1,000 male voters, according to the final publication of the Photo Electoral Rolls-2025.

Officials rolled out dedicated drives in constituencies that were lagging behind the state and district averages. The voter gender ratio is closely tracked in every Assembly segment and tailored strategies are deployed wherever the numbers dip. Chief Electoral Officer Nandita Gupta stressed that the health of any republic lies in the strength of its women’s participation, adding that the Election Commission of India has been steadily working to bring more women into the democratic fold.

Over the past six months, 16 constituencies have recorded substantial improvement. Bharmaur saw its ratio rise from 930 to 948, Indora from 939 to 952 and Fatehpur from 972 to 976. Other constituencies showing notable progress include Banjar (967 to 968), Karsog (972 to 977), Seraj (935 to 939), Drang (970 to 972), Chintpurni (959 to 961), Shri Naina Devi (962 to 966), Nalagarh (956 to 959), Doon (922 to 925), Kasauli (949 to 951), Shillai (820 to 833), Shimla (934 to 936), Rampur (946 to 950) and Rohru (955 to 967).

A key push came from grassroots interactions in the panchayats of Balikoti, Bandli and Kando-Bhatnol in the Shillai subdivision. Booth Level Officers facilitated on-the-spot enrolment, enabling 333 women, including 148 from 14 local polling stations and 185 from 97 others, to register during the drive.

The upward shift in the state’s gender ratio underscores a meaningful rise in women’s political engagement and the impact of sustained, targeted outreach.
