The district administration of Lahaul and Spiti has officially announced the reopening of the strategically important Sumdo-Kaza-Gramphu highway from the Manali side to civil traffic, permitting the movement of 4x4 vehicles. The stretch had remained closed since November 2024 due to heavy snowfall at the mighty Kunzum Pass (14,931 ft), a critical access point to the Spiti Valley.

The order to reopen the highway was issued by Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadhana yesterday after snow clearance work was completed by the BRO. A few days ago, the BRO had successfully cleared snow on the Gramphu-Losar section, restoring it for vehicular movement after a seven-month closure.

The reopening of this route has been met with enthusiasm by the local tourism sector. Tourists are now arriving in large numbers in the Spiti region from the Manali side, providing much-needed boost to the local economy.

Takpa Tenzin, a local tourism stakeholder, expressed optimism about the sudden rise in visitors. “Since the highway reopened, there’s been a significant increase in tourist arrivals. We are hopeful this trend will continue and help revive tourism in the region,” he said.

Sonam Targey, president of the Home Stays Owners Association of Spiti, echoed similar sentiment. “The conflict between India and Pakistan had a negative impact on tourist footfall in May. But now, with the reopening of the highway, we are seeing a promising surge in visitors,” he said.

“We are prepared to welcome tourists with open arms. The weather is pleasant, and Spiti offers panoramic views and a serene environment, especially attractive during the summer when the plains experience intense heat,” he said.

The scenic Spiti Valley, known for its rugged landscapes, ancient monasteries and unique culture becomes accessible during the summer months when roads are open. The reopening of this key route not only enhances connectivity but also strengthens hopes for a thriving tourism season.

While only 4x4 vehicles are currently allowed due to terrain and safety concerns, the administration may consider allowing regular vehicles as road conditions improve in the coming weeks. For now, the resumption of movement through the Kunzum Pass marks a welcome development for both travellers and locals dependent on the tourism economy.
