Tributes paid to martyr Captain Mridul Sharma

The bust of martyr Captain Mridul Sharma, decorated with the Shaurya Chakra, was unveiled by Deputy Commissioner Amarjit Singh on his martyrdom day at Mridul Chowk here on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, the DC said the country could never forget the supreme sacrifice made by its gallant warriors.

It was proud moment to install and unveil the bust of Captain Sharma, who sacrificed his life for the country on this day 20 years ago.

SP Bhagat Singh Thakur, ASP Rajesh Kumar, government officials, Ex-servicemen and Hamirpur citizen paid their tributes to the martyr at the event, remembering the supreme sacrifice he made for the country.

At the age of 26, Captain Sharma was martyred in an encounter with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir on the intervening night of December 31, 2003 and January 1, 2004. For his indomitable courage, he was posthumously decorated with the Army Medal (Gallantry) by the Centre.

The state government had christened a local school Shaheed Capt Mridul Sharma Government Senior Secondary School in his honour.

MLA Ashish Sharma also paid his tribute to the martyr at the event. He said Rs 60 lakh had been sanctioned for the development of a Shaheed Samark in the town by the BJP government. The project had been delayed due to financial constraints of the state government but would be completed soon, he added.
