The Nurpur district police received a major boost in their anti-drug trafficking campaign in the interstate border belt after two peddlers were convicted under the NDPS Act by the Special Judge, Nurpur, on Thursday.

The court convicted Ravi Singh, son of Promod Singh of Bhaleta village (Nurpur), sentencing him to two years’ rigorous imprisonment along with a fine of Rs 10,000. He had been arrested on January 5, 2018, when Nurpur police recovered 6.86 gm of heroin from him during patrolling at Naglar. While he now stands convicted in this case, two more NDPS cases registered against him in November 2018 and March 2023 are still pending trial.

In a separate case, Kuldeep Kumar, alias Kaka, son of Gyan Chand of Barota (Indora), was convicted for possession of 14.2 kg poppy husk seized during a police raid at his house on April 15, 2015. He was sentenced to three years’ rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 15,000. Police said Kuldeep is a habitual offender, with multiple NDPS cases registered against him, including two by Mukerian and Hazipur police stations in neighbouring Punjab in 2019 and 2023, both still under trial.

Nurpur SP Ashok Ratan termed the convictions a significant step in the fight against drug smuggling. Appealing for community support, he emphasised that the police are not only cracking down on habitual offenders but also ensuring their convictions in court to achieve lasting results in the campaign.
