University student falls to death from hostel building

The deceased was identified as Akhil, resident of Kinnaur district, who was pursuing BA-LLB and was studying in first semester.
He fell from the hostel building late Friday night and sustained serious injuries. Other students alerted the hostel authorities who informed the police and called an ambulance.
Akhil was rushed to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital where he was declared brought dead. The body will be handed over to the family after post mortem.
Shimla Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Navdeep Singh said a police team had visited the spot and further investigation was under way. Meanwhile, activists of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad held a protest and demanded an investigation in the death.
ABVP leader Sana said the incident had highlighted their long-standing demands, including the installation of surveillance cameras, enhancing security measures and need to prevent unauthorised entry in hostels. The ABVP attributed the recurrence of such mishaps to alleged negligence on the university’s part and demanded strict action to prevent a repeat of such incidents.
The ABVP also demanded swift public disclosure of all facts related to the incident and insisted on transparency throughout the investigation process.
The university administration stated that it had taken the incident seriously and would not tolerate any lapses in security.
