Unlocking hidden potential of river rafting in Kangra dist

The serene waters of the Beas in the Ghalor and Chambapattan areas of Jawalamukhi Assembly constituency, Kangra district, hold immense potential for tourism, particularly river rafting and allied water sports. Experts believe the pristine and gently flowing Grade-1 waters in this region are ideal for safe rafting activities, unlike the challenging Grade-4 rapids of Manali.

The proposed rafting site offers breathtaking views of the Adinath Kaleshwar Mahadev Temple, situated across the river. This picturesque location attracts numerous devotees who visit for spiritual experiences and holy dips in the Panch Tirtha Sarovar.

Lt Col (retd) Vishal Sharma, a native of Dohag village near Jwalamukhi, is spearheading efforts to develop tourism in the region. With permissions secured from the Department of Tourism and a ‘Tour Operator and Guide’ permit in hand, he has completed an extensive recce of the terrain.

Speaking to The Tribune, Lt Col Sharma said, “This stretch is one of the safest for rafting. The untapped potential here can create significant employment opportunities for locals and become a game-changer for the region.”

Deputy Director of Tourism, Vinay Dhiman, emphasised the region’s vast potential for adventure sports. He highlighted the success of the recently conducted Asian Rafting Championship and shared plans for upcoming developments. A rafting complex is already under construction in Nadaun, while efforts are underway to facilitate water sports across Kangra district.

The rafting route, starting from the old SDM office in Nadaun, extends through Chambapattan and Dehra, concluding at Pong Lake. Dhiman lauded the efforts of Lt Col Sharma and his team, ‘Ultimate Survivors,’ for their dedication to unlocking unexplored avenues in the region.
