The snowfall began yesterday and has continued today, affecting both high-altitude and lower-altitude regions. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a heavy rain and snowfall warning is in effect from October 5 to 7 for the district.

The district headquarters, Keylong, also experienced mild snowfall today, causing temperatures to plummet and increasing the cold wave conditions throughout the region.

In response to the deteriorating weather and to prevent any untoward incidents, the Lahaul and Spiti district administration has closed several key routes until further notice. As per a public advisory issued by Superintendent of Police Shivani Mehla, the following roads are now officially closed: Koksar to Losar (NH-505) — closed due to heavy snowfall; Darcha to Sarchu stretch on Manali-Leh highway (NH-003) — closed, police checkpoints will manage traffic; Darcha to Shinkula road — closed due to snow accumulation.

Lahaul and Spiti district administration has also issued a set of safety guidelines for tourists and residents. Travellers are advised to avoid non-essential travel, confirm road and weather conditions before setting out, park vehicles in safe locations away from slopes and riverbanks and refrain from attempting to cross streams or water-logged areas. Hotel and homestay operators have been instructed to guide and ensure the safety of their guests.

Apple orchardists in the region are particularly worried as the snowfall has arrived just ahead of the harvesting season. The snow has caused physical damage to the branches of apple trees, which could lead to both crop loss and long-term harm to the orchards themselves.

The cold weather has also affected the high-altitude regions of Mandi and Kullu districts, where mild snowfall was reported. The lower areas experienced rainfall.

In case of emergency, the public can contact the District Disaster Management Centre, Lahaul and Spiti, at 94594-61355, 01900-202509/ 510/ 517 and toll-free number 107. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and will issue updates as conditions evolve.
