The state government has banned the use of PET plastic bottles (up to 500 ml) from June 1, 2025, at all indoor events and functions organised by various departments, boards and corporations.

Director, Environment, Science and Technology, DC Rana said here today that the decision had been taken in view of the widespread use of PET water bottles, raising environmental concerns due to their high potential for littering. He added that the notification in this regard had been issued in exercise of powers under sub-section (1) of Section 3 A of the HP Non-Biodegradable Garbage (Control) Act, 1995.

The government has decided to impose a fine of Rs 1,500 for the littering of non-biodegradable material and Rs 10,000 for non-installation of garbage bins in cars, taxis/vehicles for public interest and the provision will come into force from April 29 in the entire state.

He said that the prohibition also applied to HPTDC and private hotels which would be encouraged to use sustainable alternatives such as glass bottles, water dispensers/kiosks or steel containers.
