Thirty farmers each from Salogra and Rajana panchayats were equipped with the nitty-gritty of agro-processing at a two-day training programme organised by the Department of Food Science and Technology, Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni.

The farmers participated in the programme “Making Agro-Processing a Profitable Economic Activity and Promoting Agribusiness Entrepreneurship” under the Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojana (RKVY-RAFTAAR) . The two-day session concluded this evening.

Scientists from the Department of Food Science and Technology provided hands-on training aimed at enhancing the entrepreneurial and technical skills of local women self-help groups. The focus was on value addition to locally available agricultural and horticultural produce. Participants were introduced to scientific methods of food preservation, modern processing techniques, hygienic practices, safe packaging standards and labelling requirements.

Practical demonstrations included the preparation of rhododendron squash, kiwi bars, jams, pickles, chutneys and other products, with emphasis on quality control and compliance with Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. norms. Experts dwelt upon the significance of value addition to fruits, vegetables, cereals, pulses and milk and how they can significantly increase farmers’ income, generate self-employment and promote local produce in wider markets.

The training concluded with sessions on entrepreneurship opportunities, product branding, labelling and market linkages, equipping participants with knowledge to transform agro-processing into a sustainable business venture.
