Vehicle plunges into river in Nerwa; 2 dead, 10-year-old missing

Two persons, including one from Punjab, were killed, while a 10-year-old child is missing after the SUV (PB 32G 8768) they were travelling in skidded into a river in Nerwa, Shimla district, police said here today. Also, two persons sustained injuries as a result of the accident.

The deceased have been identified as Gurmel Lal, a resident of Nawanshahr in Punjab and Kumar Suchi, a resident of Nerwa, while the injured have been identified as Keshav Kumar and Balvinder, both residents of Nawanshahr. The missing boy has been identified as Vineet, son of Balvinder.

According to reports, the accident took place late Sunday evening when they were on their way to Dhar Chandna village in Chopal tehsil, Shimla, from Nerwa to attend a religious ceremony. When the vehicle reached near Batal village, around 14 kilometres away from Nerwa, the driver lost control of the vehicle and it plunged into Shalvi river. As a result, four of them sustained serious injuries. A 10-year-old boy was swept away into the river.

The accident was noticed by the locals who immediately informed the police.

A police team from Nerwa reached the spot as soon as it received the information and rescued the injured with the assistance of locals. They were rushed to Civil Hospital, Nerwa, where two of them succumbed to injuries.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Chopal Sushant Sharma confirmed the report and said that police has initiated the investigation and the search operation to find the missing boy is going on.
