Virendra Singh, a resident of Laganu village in Sirmaur district’s Sangrah panchayat, has been selected to represent India at the Open Para-Olympic Athletics Meet in Sharjah, UAE. His selection has brought pride to his village, with locals visiting his home to offer their congratulations.
The competition is set to be held from January 30 to February 6, where Virendra would compete in the 1500m and 5000m races. Currently working as a pharmacy officer in the Ayush Department at Tonda in the Bogdhar region, Virendra has previously participated in several national para-Olympic events. Virendra’s selection for this international meet marks a significant achievement in his athletic career.
Virendra’s track record in para-athletics is impressive. In 2017, he won a bronze in the 5000m race in Jaipur and the following year, he secured another bronze in the 1500m race in Panchkula. In 2019, he earned silver medals in the 5000m in Ludhiana and in both the 800m and 1500m events. That same year, he was also able to secure more silver in the 800m, 1500m and 5000m races.
In addition to his sporting achievements, Virendra is widely respected for his philanthropy. He has raised nearly nine lakh rupees for the treatment of underprivileged people in Sirmaur, making a lasting impact on his community.
