Warmer days, nights bring relief for residents in Solan district

The district is witnessing warmer nights for the last two days due to the rise in minimum temperature which is the highest in the past 10 years. The days have been sunny in the region in contrast to foggy weather conditions prevailing in the plains.

This change in climate has brought some relief for residents as biting cold weather hit the region after a brief spell of snow in the higher reaches of the state last week.

According to the weather data of the Department of Environmental Sciences (DES), Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, today the maximum temperature was recorded at 22°C and the minimum hovered around 6.5° C. The maximum temperature was 24.5° C yesterday while the minimum stood at 4.5°C.

“The rise in the minimum temperature in the region for the last two days is the highest since 2015,” informed Dr Satish Bhardwaj, head of the DES, Nauni university.

“The western disturbance, brings rain during winters in the region, has been weak. Due to this the region has witnessed less rain, besides rise in the temperature. Rain is expected from January 6 onwards in the district,” said Dr Bhardwaj.

Temperature analysis of the region during the last decade for early January shows that the lowest minimum temperature had remained in minus during the past 10 years. The minimum temperature was recorded at -0.5°C in 2015, -1.4°C in 2016, -1.2°C in 2017, -0.1°C in 2018, -1.5°C in 2019, -1.6°C in 2020, -0.7°C in 2021, 0°C in 2022, -1.2°C in 2023 and -0.2°C in 2024. The minimum temperature rose to 2°C in 2025.

The highest temperature recorded in the last decade also reflected warmer weather conditions during this time in the region. The year 2024 was the warmest with maximum temperature recorded at 26.5°C on January 12. The maximum temperature hovered at 24.5°C today which was similar to the year 2021. In 2023, the maximum temperature touched 26°C on January 8 while it hovered between 20°C to 23°C from 2015 to 2022.

“The rainfall in Himachal Pradesh will likely be below normal during this winter season which will extend upto March. Monthly rainfall for January is, however, predicted to be above normal in the hill state. Monthly maximum and minimum temperatures will most likely be below normal in January according to the Indian Meteorological Department,” said a weather scientist.
