Water supply in Shimla to be hit due to transmission line shutdown

The water supply in Shimla will be disrupted for the next two days due to the shutdown of the 66 kV Jutogh-Gumma-Sanj-Hulli transmission line. The shutdown is being carried out to lop trees and clear the right of way for the transmission line to ensure a reliable power supply during the ongoing winter season. Maintenance work on transformers and associated equipment at all 66 kV substations connected to the line is also planned.

The decision to shut down the transmission line was discussed during a meeting chaired by the Managing Director and CEO of Shimla Jal Prabandhan Nigam Limited (SJPNL) on December 17. In a letter to SJPNL, the Himachal Pradesh State Electricity Board Limited (HPSEBL) said the pumping activity of the Gumma and Giri water supply schemes would remain affected during the shutdown. The HPSEBL requested SJPNL to adjust pumping schedules to ensure that Shimla and its surrounding areas have sufficient water supply during the disruption.

The HPSEBL clarified that if adverse weather conditions prevent the planned shutdown on January 5, the power supply to the Giri and Gumma schemes will remain unaffected, and the shutdown will be rescheduled for the next day.

On Saturday, Shimla received a total of 42.94 million liters of water, with the Gumma scheme contributing 17.56 MLD and the Giri scheme providing 17.19 MLD. Additional water supply came from Churot (3.29 MLD), Koti Brandi (3.75 MLD), Chairh (1.03 MLD), and Seog Water Supply Scheme (0.12 MLD). However, Shimla’s daily water requirement averages 45 million liters and increases to 48 million liters during the tourist season.

SJPNL officials have urged residents to use water judiciously during the disruption to minimise inconvenience. Residents are advised to plan their water usage carefully until the transmission line maintenance is complete and regular water supply is restored.
