In the past five years, 1,617 NRI women have allegedly been abandoned by their spouses in foreign countries, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha posed by Punjab MP Balbir Singh Seechewal.

The MEA clarified that it does not maintain state-wise data on Indian women abandoned by their husbands abroad. Cases involving women whose spouses left them in India after marriage and settled abroad fall under the jurisdiction of state governments.
