65-km jam in Bihar; vehicles struck for 4 days on Delhi-Kolkata highway; watch video

A massive traffic jam has brought the Delhi-Kolkata National Highway 19 to a standstill in Bihar, leaving hundreds of vehicles stranded for the past four days.

The gridlock stretches from Rohtas to Aurangabad, a distance of nearly 65 kilometres, with no visible relief efforts underway.

The chaos began after heavy rains lashed Rohtas district last Friday, flooding service lanes and diversions constructed by the highway expansion company. The waterlogging, combined with widespread potholes, has severely damaged the roads, causing vehicles to skid and worsen the already dire congestion.

Vehicles are now moving at a snail’s pace, barely covering five kilometres in 24 hours.

The traffic bottleneck has disrupted more than just commuters. Truck drivers transporting perishable goods are concerned about losses due to delays. Emergency services, ambulances, pedestrians and tourists are also facing severe hardship.

Despite the escalating crisis, authorities remain largely unresponsive, says media reports.
