Army clears Rs 30K-cr ‘Anant Shastra’ missile system to boost air defence

Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsMonths after the success of Operation Sindoor, the Indian Army has moved to strengthen its air defence network by clearing the acquisition of specialised Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missiles (QR-SAMs) capable of taking on enemy aircraft, drones and missiles.
The Army has issued a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the induction of the system, named Anant Shastra. An RFP marks the second stage of the tender process, to be followed by price negotiations and contract signing.
The system is designed to protect tanks, infantry combat vehicles and artillery guns — the backbone of India’s mobile battle groups — not only against enemy aircraft, but also against new-age threats such as drones and loitering munitions.
Under the project, three regiments — about 36 launchers and radars — will be inducted at a cost of around Rs 30,000 crore. These will be deployed along critical stretches of India’s western and northern borders, giving the Army air defence a formidable edge in protecting troops on the move.
The QR-SAM, developed indigenously by DRDO with support from Bharat Electronics Limited and Bharat Dynamics Limited, will be integrated with the Army’s Akashteer, an Indian, mobile, automated air defence command and control network. Mounted on high-mobility 8x8 vehicles, it can operate seamlessly across mountains, deserts and plains.
The missile system can neutralise threats at ranges of 30-40 km at altitudes of 6-10 km, including fighter aircraft, attack helicopters, drones, rockets and missiles.
It is equipped with 360-degree radar, automated C2 systems, all-weather tracking and anti-jamming features, ensuring reliability even in hostile battlefield conditions.
The Army’s performance during Operation Sindoor had already showcased its air defence strength. With the induction of QR-SAMs, that capability is set to become significantly stronger.
