First signs of the long pending BJP presidential poll being on the cards appeared on Thursday night when the party finalised the schedule for the election of chief in the state unit of Uttar Pradesh.

BJP organisational election in-charge K Laxman had earlier said the BJP chief would be elected once party presidents in major states, including UP, Haryana and Delhi were in place. The Tribune has learnt that the nominations for UP BJP presidential poll would be held on December 13 in the presence of BJP general secretary Vinod Tawde.

If only one nomination is received, which is likely, the name of the BJP Uttar Pradesh chief will be announced by state BJP election in-charge Piyush Goyal on December 14.

Sources said the BJP would soon schedule elections for presidents in the remaining states, including Delhi and Haryana.

As per the BJP constitution, party’s national president can be elected once chiefs in half the state organisational units have concluded. Although this condition was met three months ago, the BJP had been postponing the poll. As a result, incumbent BJP chief JP Nadda has been on a prolonged extension.
