Thought-provoking Opinions, Expert Analysis, In-depth Insights and other Member Only BenefitsThe Congress on Saturday alleged that the Election Commission had turned the special intensive revision (SIR) exercise into a political tool to help the BJP and its allies.
Pointing out alleged discrepancies in the electoral rolls in Bihar, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh asked, “Will Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar explain how 247 voters were found in a single household and why an individual’s name has appeared three times on the same booth? How are such massive irregularities surfacing in the final voter list?”
Party general secretary and in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh said the entire process had been “scripted at the behest of the BJP”. Irregularities reported from across Bihar show that the EC’s claims of corrections in the final voter rolls were false. He said that the commission was acting like the “B-team of the BJP” and ignoring even the Supreme Court’s directives.
In a post on X, Ramesh wrote, “The entire process has been designed to benefit the BJP and its friendly parties.”
He also flagged that in some constituencies, the number of deleted names was higher than the margins of victory in past elections.
Ramesh further said that the EC’s “sloppy functioning and politically biased approach” was damaging India’s democracy as well as its international image.
