Congress slams PM Modi over remarks on terrorism in Xi Jinping meet

The Congress on Monday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of compromising India’s national interest during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Tianjin, alleging that he chose to remain silent on China’s links with Pakistan while calling both countries “victims of terrorism”.

In a post on X, senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the Prime Minister’s remarks marked “a day of infamy”, claiming that India had long accused Beijing of “double standards” on terrorism, but Modi had now capitulated before Xi.

“If this is not the so-called elephant capitulating before the so-called dragon, then what is it?” Ramesh asked.

He alleged that Modi failed to raise China’s reported coordination with Pakistan during Operation Sindoor, details of which, Ramesh said, were made public by senior Army officers themselves.

“The self-proclaimed 56-inch chested leader now stands thoroughly exposed,” he wrote, recalling the Prime Minister’s statement of June 19, 2020, when he declared that no Chinese troops had entered Indian territory.

"Now, August 31, 2025, will also go down as a day of infamy for his cowardly kowtowing in Tianjin," Ramesh wrote.
