The meeting comes on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where Jaishankar is expected to hold a series of bilateral engagements with counterparts from across the world.

The talks are expected to be closely watched in both Capitals as they take place against the backdrop of tariff tensions.

Earlier, the US imposed steep import duties, including a 50% tariff on key Indian exports, citing concerns over India’s energy trade with Russia. New Delhi has pushed back but described ongoing trade discussions with Washington as “positive” and “forward-looking,” suggesting room for compromise.

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal is also in the United States leading a trade delegation, underscoring the urgency of resolving differences. Negotiations for a long-pending Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) are under way, with both sides eager to expand market access and stabilize trade ties.

Beyond trade, Jaishankar and Rubio are expected to review cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, maritime security, defence, and other global security challenges. The US and India have repeatedly stressed their commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indo-Pacific.
