The EU has approved a new package of sanctions against Russia, which for the first time targets Indian and Chinese companies for supporting the conflict in Ukraine.

The list of companies has not been disclosed yet, but includes companies from Sri Lanka, Thailand, Turkey, Serbia and Kazakhstan. The names of companies and individuals targeted will be shortly notified by the EU, most likely on February 24, the second anniversary of Russia’s conflict with Ukraine. At least one Indian company is reportedly in the 13th round of sanctions firmed up by the EU.

“We must keep degrading Putin’s war machine and keep the pressure high on the Kremlin,” said European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen.

The sanctions are being applied against the companies that have been allegedly supplying electronics and microchips to bolster Russia’s use of drones and other hi-tech products.
