Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday said women were key to the goal of national progress and must be liberated from the shackles of regressive customs and traditions. The Hindu body has often been criticised for being an all-male organisation, although the RSS has a separate women’s wing, Sevika Samiti, which is one of its 36 affiliates.

Speaking at an event organised by the NGO, Udyogwardhini, at Solapur in Maharashtra, the RSS chief said it was foolhardy for men to claim that they could empower women. “Women are self-reliant and capable of empowering themselves,” he said.

Bhagwat said, “A man will work till the day he dies, so will a woman. But a woman will inspire generations to come.”

“She nurtures children with care and affection. God has given her superior qualities that enable women to do things that men cannot, but at the same time, God has given to women all the qualities that he has given to men,” said Bhagwat.

The RSS chief said men should shun the ego, which makes them think they can empower women. “Let women do what they want. Liberate them from regressive customs and traditions. When a woman uplifts herself, she uplifts the whole society,” he said.
