German, Indian firms join hands to make torpedoes

German engineering company Thyssen Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS) today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian defence company VEM Technologies for cooperation in making torpedoes.

The agreement lays the foundation for the development, production, integration, testing and modernisation of heavyweight torpedoes which is supported by TKMS and its sister concern Atlas Electronik. The VEM technologies will take over the integration and testing of the torpedoes in India.

The torpedoes of Atlas Electronik are used by the Navy’s Kalvari class submarines.

Oliver Burkhard, CEO of TKMS said, “We stand ready as a reliable partner to the Indian Navy. We are applying our technical expertise to accelerate the ‘Make-in-India’ strategy and strengthen the local defence industry in the long term.”

The TKMS added that it would strengthen cooperation with Indian company CFF Fluid Control Limited for the local production of towed sonar systems.

The aim is to advance the development and production of state-of-the-art anti-submarine warfare (ASW) systems for surface vessels and various other strategic applications.
