Govt puts satellite-based tolling on highways on hold

The inadequacy of India’s independent regional navigation satellite system NavIC (Navigation with Indian Constellation) has forced the government to put on hold the proposed satellite-based toll system for vehicles using highways, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari informed the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
In a written answer, Gadkari said the existing features of Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) would not be able to support the satellite-based tolling system.

“The satellite-based tolling requires additional satellite constellations to achieve desired level of positional accuracy as well as development of appropriate receivers for receiving satellite signals. It requires further deliberations to move towards satellite-based tolling,” Gadkari said.
The minister said the apex committee and high-level empowered committee consisting of experts from industry and academia, in view of security and privacy considerations and overall operational control, have recommended further deliberations on the issue of satellite-based tolling.
