More than 24 lakh Indian students took admission in foreign universities in the past three academic sessions, the Ministry of External Affairs informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply on Thursday.
The Ministry separately informed that 20.86 lakh Indians have renounced their citizenship since 2011. The MEA said, “Reasons for renouncing Indian citizenship or taking foreign citizenship are personal and known only to the individual.”

"A successful, prosperous and influential diaspora is an asset for India. India stands to gain a lot from tapping its diaspora networks and productive utilisation of the soft power that comes from having such a diaspora," it added.
Talking about students going abroad, the MEA said the Bureau of Immigration maintains the data of students who leave India for educational purposes. As per the data, 24,06,969 students have gone abroad between 2022 and 2024.
