India inaugurates state-of-the-art Consulate in Shanghai

India has inaugurated a new, modern chancery building for its Consulate General in Shanghai, marking the mission’s first relocation in more than three decades. The upgraded premises will become fully operational from December 8, officials said on Sunday.

The new facility was inaugurated by India’s Ambassador to China, Pradeep Kumar Rawat, in the presence of nearly 400 guests, including diplomats, Shanghai municipal officials and members of the Indian community from across East China.

Consul General Pratik Mathur, thanking the Ministry of External Affairs and local authorities, said the move reflected India’s commitment to improving services for both Indian nationals and Chinese partners.

The new chancery spans 1,436 sq m, more than double the size of the previous premises, enabling consolidation of consular, commercial, cultural and administrative wings on a single modern floor.

Mathur said the Dawning Centre’s position in the Hongqiao-Gubei foreign business corridor, which hosts several diplomatic missions and multinational corporations, offers strategic advantages. Its proximity to the Hongqiao transport hub and the Gubei international community is expected to strengthen the mission’s outreach across East China.

The Consul General added that the upgrade aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas”, enabling faster, more accessible and people-centric services for the Indian community.

The opening comes amid renewed momentum in India-China engagement, including the resumption of direct flights between India and Shanghai, which is expected to strengthen both trade and travel links.
