India issues advisory for nationals in Nepal amid unrest over social media ban

India has issued an advisory for its citizens in Nepal following widespread protests and unrest sparked by the Nepalese government's now-reversed decision to ban major social media platforms.

In a statement on Tuesday, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it is closely monitoring the situation in Nepal and urged Indian nationals in the country to remain cautious and follow all guidelines issued by local authorities.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of many young lives during the recent unrest,” the MEA said. “Our thoughts are with the families of the deceased, and we wish a speedy recovery to the injured.”

India expressed hope that the situation would be resolved peacefully, urging all parties to exercise restraint and engage in dialogue.

The advisory comes after violent protests erupted in Nepal on Monday, following the government’s decision to block 26 social media platforms, including Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), for failing to register with the authorities. The ban was met with strong resistance, particularly from youth groups, leading to demonstrations in Kathmandu and other cities.

Clashes between protesters and police left at least 19 people dead and over 300 injured. The unrest escalated when demonstrators breached the Parliament complex, prompting police to respond with tear gas, water cannons, and live ammunition.

In an emergency Cabinet meeting late Monday, Nepal’s Minister for Communication, Information and Broadcasting, Prithvi Subba Gurung, announced the withdrawal of the social media ban. The government has since ordered all platforms to be reinstated.

Minister Gurung also appealed to the youth-led protest movement, largely driven by 'Gen Z' activists, to end their demonstrations.

Curfews have been imposed in Kathmandu and several other cities to prevent further violence.

Indian citizens currently in Nepal are strongly advised to avoid large gatherings, stay updated through official sources, and comply with local advisories for their safety.
