India, Portugal vow to deepen ties as nations mark 50 years of diplomatic relations

India and Portugal have agreed to further strengthen their partnership across key areas, including trade, defence, renewable energy and education, as both nations mark the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic ties this year.

The commitment came during the 5th India-Portugal Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) held in Lisbon on November 3. The talks were co-chaired by Sibi George, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs, and Helena Malcata, Director General for Foreign Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Portugal.

Both sides reviewed the full range of bilateral relations, covering political, economic, and cultural cooperation, and agreed to expedite discussions on pending bilateral agreements for early conclusion.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the two delegations also exchanged views on India-EU relations, and on regional and global issues of mutual interest, reaffirming their resolve to continue close coordination at multilateral forums, including the United Nations.

During his visit, George also called on Ana Isabel Xavier, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, for talks aimed at broadening strategic engagement.

Highlighting the growing momentum in ties, both sides expressed satisfaction over the high-level exchanges held this year, including visits to Portugal by the President of India, the Lok Sabha Speaker, and the Finance Minister.

It was agreed that the next round of consultations will be held in New Delhi, at mutually convenient dates.
