India-Russia naval exercise begins in Chennai

The 14th edition of the India-Russia bilateral naval exercise INDRA, a cornerstone of the maritime partnership between the two nations, began in Chennai on Friday. The exercise will conclude on April 2.

The Ministry of Defence stated that the exercise has evolved into a symbol of maritime cooperation, underscoring both countries’ commitment to enhancing naval interoperability and operational synergy. The exercise is being conducted in two phases: Harbour phase (March 28-30) in Chennai and the sea phase (March 31-April 2) in the Bay of Bengal.

The exercise features participation from the Russian Navy’s Pechanga, Rezkiy and Aldar Tsydenzhapov, alongside the Indian Navy’s INS Rana, INS Kuthar and maritime patrol aircraft P-8I.

During the harbour phase, activities will include subject matter expert exchanges (SMEEs), reciprocal visits, sports fixtures and pre-sail briefings between naval personnel from both nations.

The sea phase will involve advanced naval drills such as tactical manoeuvres, live weapon firings, anti-air operations, underway replenishment, helicopter cross-deck landings and exchange of sea riders.

According to the MoD, these exercises aim to enhance maritime cooperation, strengthen diplomatic ties, facilitate the exchange of best operational practices and reinforce the long-standing friendship between India and Russia.
