India, US firms to jointly make coolant pumps for N-reactors

In a landmark first for India’s nuclear sector, Core Energy Systems Limited has entered into a collaboration with a US company, Flowserve, to locally manufacture ‘primary coolant pumps' (PCPs).

PCPs are among the technologically intensive and critical components of a nuclear power plant, enabling a continuous coolant supply to remove heat from the reactor’s core, protecting the reactor and ensuring uninterrupted, safe power generation.

A statement of the company said the collaboration had been formalised in Washington, DC in the presence of officials from the US Department of Energy and the Indian Embassy.

The US Department of Energy granted Flowserve US specific authorisation under for transfer technology to India. Earlier, in November 2024, India's Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) authorised Core to collaborate with Flowserve US.

During the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the US in February, Modi and US President Donald Trump announced their commitment to fully realize the US-India civil nuclear agreement by moving forward with plans to work together to build US- designed nuclear reactors in India through large-scale localisation and possible technology transfer.
