The 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG) will be held in Ahmedabad. The city was officially confirmed as the host on Wednesday as the delegates of 74 Commonwealth member nations ratified India’s bid at the Commonwealth Sport General Assembly in Glasgow.
This will be the first time in 20 years after the 2010 edition that the country will play host to a multi-discipline sports event.
India was the overwhelming favourite to get the backing as the Commonwealth Sport’s Executive Council had backed its bid over Abuja, Nigeria, last month. “It’s a momentous occasion for India. Today marks a major milestone in India’s quest for becoming a sporting powerhouse. We have held major international meets like the Boxing World Cup and the Para World Athletics Championships, and we have shown that we as the country are capable of hosting major tournaments in the future as well,” Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said.
In the build-up to the CWG, India will also host the World Police Games in 2029, the minister said.
“It will boost our chances to host the 2036 Olympic Games. We have a plan to take India among the top-10 sporting nations of the world in the next 10 years and by 2047 in the top-five,” Mandaviya said.
The Indian delegation in Glasgow was represented by Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, IOA CEO Raghuram Iyer, Gujarat Sports Minister Harsh Sanghavi and Joint Sports Secretary Kunal.
“We are deeply honoured by the trust shown by Commonwealth Sport. The 2030 Games will not only celebrate 100 years of the Commonwealth movement but also lay the foundation for the next century. It will bring together athletes, communities and cultures from across the Commonwealth in a spirit of friendship and progress,” said PT Usha.
Donald Rukare, president of Commonwealth Sport, called it the start of a golden era.
“After ‘Games reset’, we head to Glasgow 2026 in fantastic shape to welcome 74 teams of the Commonwealth Games before setting our sights on Ahmedabad 2030 for a special centenary edition of the CWG,” he said.
“India brings scale, youth, ambition, rich culture, enormous sporting passion and relevance, and I am delighted to report strong interest from a range of nations to host the 2034 Games and beyond. We start our next century in good health,” he said
