Maha Kumbh not happening after 144 yrs: Mamata

In remarks that may once again stir a hornet’s nest, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday dismissed claims that the Maha Kumbh was taking place after 144 years, calling these “not true”.

“If I am mistaken, you can correct me, but saying that the Maha Kumbh is happening after 144 years is incorrect,” she said at a press conference at the state secretariat in Howrah near Kolkata. Her comments come as top politicians and celebrities continue to visit Triveni Sangam for a holy dip, sharing their experiences on social media.

Banerjee, who previously faced backlash from the BJP for criticising the alleged mismanagement at the Kumbh Mela following stampede-related deaths, had referred to the event as “Mrityu Kumbh”.

Reiterating her stance, she said, “The Maha Kumbh takes place every 12 years. Those claiming it is happening after 144 years should remember that it was held in 2014 as well.” Criticising the UP Government’s handling of the congregation, Banerjee said, “I have great respect for the pilgrims taking a holy dip. My concern is about the planning and preparations.” She urged the Yogi Adityanath-led government to compensate the families of those who lost their lives in the stampede, adding, “If there is no proper planning, people will face difficulties.”
