Mamata urges Centre to move UN for intervention in Bangladesh

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday expressed concern over the situation in Bangladesh and urged the Centre to involve the United Nations in deploying a peacekeeping mission in the neighboring country. She also called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s intervention to facilitate the return of persecuted Indians from Bangladesh.

Banerjee demanded that the Union External Affairs Minister apprise Parliament of India’s stance on the issue during the ongoing winter session if the Prime Minister is unable to address it.

Regrettable: MEA On Breach Of Bangladesh Mission

New Delhi: India on Monday described as “deeply regrettable” an incident of breach of the premises of Bangladesh Assistant High Commission in Agartala by a group of people protesting against the arrest of Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das in the neighbouring country. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said consular properties should not be targeted under any circumstances and that the government is beefing up security at the Bangladeshi missions in India following the incident. pti

Speaking in the Assembly, she clarified that as Chief Minister, she could not comment on bilateral issues, given Bengal’s role within India’s federal structure. However, she highlighted concerns based on accounts from residents with connections to Bangladesh, reports of arrests along the border and discussions with ISKCON representatives.

“I urge the Ministry of External Affairs to engage with Bangladesh’s authorities, and if necessary, with the UN. If required, let an international peacekeeping force be sent to Bangladesh, in consultation with its interim government, to help restore normalcy,” she said.
