Modi begins 3-nation tour, to attend G20 summit in Brazil

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday embarked on a three-nation visit to Nigeria, Brazil and Guyana, during which he will attend the G20 summit in Brazil.

Before leaving for the visit, Modi said India’s successful presidency at G20 last year mainstreamed the priorities of the ‘Global South’. “This year, Brazil has built upon India’s legacy. I look forward to meaningful discussions in keeping with our vision of ‘One earth, one family, one future. I will also use the opportunity to exchange views on furthering bilateral cooperation with several other leaders,” the PM added.

On Wednesday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had said, “This is going to be quite a valuable opportunity for leaders to have bilateral meetings on the sidelines.”

Asked about the consensus at the G20 on geo-political issues, Misri had said the Leaders’ Declaration at the summit was going to be a consolidated consensus document.

The PM’s first stop will be Nigeria and second Brazil. It will be the first visit by an Indian PM to Nigeria in 17 years. The last stop of Modi would be at Guyana. The visit to Guyana will be the first by an Indian PM since 1968.

Earlier in 2023, Guyanese President Mohamed Irfaan Ali visited India as the chief guest at the 17th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Indore. In Georgetown, Guyana, he will participate in the second CARICOM-India Summit. The PM's three-nation visit will conclude on November 21.
