The First Information Report (FIR) was registered by the special cell of the Delhi Police on Sunday under Section 79 (word, gesture, or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the new criminal code, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

The FIR was based on a complaint by Sharma. She has also written to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, requesting him to take “appropriate action” against the TMC MP.

The incident began from a remark made by Moitra on social media platform X, in reaction to a video showing Sharma meeting women injured in the Hathras stampede, in which 121 people were killed. The video had someone holding an umbrella for Sharma, wherein Moitra commented “pajamas” reference. However, she later deleted the post and the police have sought details about it from the social media giant.

The NCW took cognisance of the remark on Friday and sought a case against Moitra.

Responding to the post by the NCW on X, she tagged the Delhi Police and challenged them to take immediate action, even providing her location.

“Come on @DelhiPolice please take action immediately on these suo moto orders. Am in Nadia in case you need me in the next 3 days to make a quick arrest,” Moitra wrote, adding, “I Can Hold My Own Umbrella (sic),” the post read.
