A committee led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday decided to re-elect Vijaya Bharathi Sayani as the acting chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) after consultations with Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, who are part of the selection panel, sources said.

The decision to continue with Sayani, who took charge as the acting chairperson on June 2 after Justice (retired) Arun Kumar Mishra completed his tenure on June 1, was taken after Modi met Leaders of Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, respectively, as well as Speaker Om Birla on Wednesday.

The panel consists of the PM, Home Minister, LoPs of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Speaker and Deputy Chairperson of the Rajya Sabha. Home Minister Amit Shah and Deputy Chairperson Harivansh were not present in the meeting.
