PM Modi addresses Guyana Parliament, his 14th Parliamentary address abroad

Prime Minister Narendra Modi address to the Special Session of the Guyanese Parliament on Thursday was the 14^th such instance when he spoke on behalf of the people of India in the Parliaments of foreign nations.

Modi holds the distinction of being the Indian Prime Minister with the highest number of addresses to foreign Parliaments, official sources said.

They said his 14 addresses to Foreign Parliaments are double the number of addresses by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, who had delivered seven such addresses.

Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had addressed foreign legislatures four times, while India’s first PM Jawaharlal Nehru did it three times.

Former PMs Rajiv Gandhi and Atal Bihari Vajpayee delivered two such addresses, while Morarji Desai and PV Narsimha Rao addressed once each.

“Over the years, PM Modi has delivered speeches in legislative chambers across the world, from the Americas to Europe, Africa, Australia and Asia. His addresses, which transcend continents, are a testament to India’s growing influence on the global stage. PM has addressed the joint session of US Congress twice - in 2016 and then again in 2023,” sources said.

In 2014, the Prime Minister addressed the Parliaments of Australia and Fiji and in 2015, he addressed the British Parliament.

In Africa, the Prime Minister addressed the National Assembly of Mauritius in 2015 and the Parliament of Uganda in 2018.

In Asia, he addressed the Parliament of joint session of the Bhutanese Parliament and Nepal Constituent Assembly in 2014, Parliaments of Sri Lanka, Mongolia and Afghanistan in 2015, and Parliament of Maldives in 2019.
