At what was an informal setting on the lawns of 7 Lok Kalyan Marg, members informed the PM of the widespread endorsement of the Indian position on counter-terrorism which the delegations received during their tours abroad.
A special mention was made by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor-led delegation whose articulation of the Indian stand led to Colombia retracting a previous statement expressing solidarity with those killed in Indian strikes in Pakistan.
The Tribune has learnt that the PM spent more time engaging non-BJP leaders and heard from them. These included Congress leaders Anand Sharma, Tharoor, Manish Tewari, Salman Khurshid and Amar Singh; NCP SP’s Supriya Sule, DMK’s Kanimozhi, former Congress veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad among others.
The PM reiterated India’s policy of zero tolerance to terrorism and said any terrorist act would be treated as an act of war and equation of terrorists and terror promoters would not be condoned anymore.
The PM spoke of the collective spirit of nation first which all delegates displayed during their global outreach on Operation Sindoor and said “the nation is supreme”.
He said all delegates had risen above party lines and differences to speak as “Indians (Bharatiya)” in an exceptional display of unity of purpose.
“The focus of the discussions was Operation Sindoor, India’s decisive victory in the conflict with Pakistan and its clear edge in the asymmetric war which is increasingly becoming a norm,” one participant said, adding that the interaction was quite formal with the PM going from table to table to hear delegates speak.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju was also present.
AIMIM leader Asadudin Owaisi whose interventions on the global stage exposed Pakistan and Pakistan sponsorship of terrorism could not attend the meeting due to a family exigency.
The PM later said, “Met members of the various delegations who represented India in different countries and elaborated on India’s commitment to peace and the need to eradicate the menace of terrorism. We are all proud of the manner in which they put forward India’s voice.”
The delegations, consisting of MPs from across party lines, former MPs and distinguished diplomats, had highlighted India’s stand against terror and India’s commitment to world peace during their visits to various nations.
Seven delegations consisting of 59 political leaders and former ambassadors travelled from May 24 onwards until June 4.
