PM Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin discuss current developments, wish each other well in elections

New Delhi, January 15

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday held a telephonic conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Current issues regarding the development of Russian-Indian relations discussed and progress in areas such as trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation, energy, transport and logistics, and cooperation in the Russian Far East were noted with satisfaction, stated a post in Russian media.

The two multipolar leaders wished each other luck in the upcoming elections and reiterated interest in fostering bilateral cooperation.

The conversation took place three weeks after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had called on Putin at the Kremlin during a five-day visit to Russia during which the two sides signed an agreement to build more nuclear power units in India and resolved to undertake joint production of defence equipment.

Coincidentally, the two leaders held a telephonic conversation at a time when their Foreign Ministers made contact with Iran.

Jaishankar is in Tehran for a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahain who along with his Defence Minister held a conversation with his Russian counterparts Sergey Lavrov and Sergei Shoigu.

Putin and PM Narendra Modi are slated to meet this year after they skipped their annual meetings for two successive years.
