A day after BJP’s ally, Janata Dal (United), asked the saffron party to get its leader Shehzad Poonawalla to retract his controversial remarks about the surname of a Purvanchali AAP leader, the latter tendered an apology.

Poonawalla in a TV debate on Wednesday had played on the surname of AAP MLA Rituraj Jha. The JD(U) warned that this could upset Purvanchali voters in poll-bound Delhi.

“I tender an apology with folded hands to all my Purvanchali brothers and sisters. My words have hurt them. I do not want to offer any justification,” Poonawalla said on Friday, in a rare retraction by a BJP leader.
