Rahul misrepresented Constitution: Anurag

The ruling BJP on Saturday hit back at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following his remarks on the Constitution and his reference to RSS ideologue VD Savarkar. BJP MP Anurag Thakur, speaking in the Lok Sabha after Rahul’s speech, alleged that the Congress leader might not even know how many pages are in the Constitution he often displays.

Thakur, the MP from Hamirpur, said, “Last time during a discussion, I mentioned that some people carry a copy of the Constitution but have no idea how many pages it contains because they’ve never opened it. Rahul shows off the book but hasn’t read even two pages.”

Referring to the preface of a Constitution copy authored by senior Supreme Court lawyer Gopal Shankar Narayan, Thakur claimed it stated that the Constitution was thankfully not influenced by Nehruvian ideology. He added, “Had the Constitution not been empowered, common citizens would not have been able to reclaim their rights or emerge from the dark chapter of the Emergency. The Congress even went as far as threatening the judiciary.”

Responding to Rahul’s “Eklavya ka angootha” (Eklavya’s thumb) comment, Thakur accused the Congress of hypocrisy, stating, “Those talking about cutting thumbs were responsible for cutting the throats of Sikhs during their rule. They talk about Sikh rights, but the maximum killings of Sikhs happened during Congress era.”

He also criticised Rahul for allegedly misrepresenting the Constitution, emphasising that it was the Constitution that ended the Emergency imposed in 1975.

His remarks sparked uproar in the Lok Sabha, with Congress MPs protesting and KC Venugopal raising a point of order in response to Thakur’s statements.
