Rainfall to be above normal in July: IMD

India will receive above-normal rainfall in July, with states like Uttarakhand and Haryana to receive good rainfall. The rainfall will exceed 106 per cent of the long period average (LPA). Based on data from 1971 to 2020, the LPA in July has been 280.4 mm.

“Geographically, most parts of the country are likely to experience normal to above-normal rainfall. However, most parts of Northeast & East India, many areas of extreme South peninsular India and some areas of Northwest India are likely to receive below-normal rainfall,” IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra said.

He said central India and the adjoining southern peninsula would receive heavy rainfall. This includes east Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, adjoining areas of Vidarbha and Telangana and parts of Gujarat and Maharashtra.

“Many south-flowing rivers originate in Uttarakhand. We must take precautions for all these river catchments, cities and towns. This region includes several cities and towns, including Delhi,” Mohapatra said.

In July, monthly average maximum temperatures are expected to remain normal to below normal in many regions, except northeast India and some areas of the northwest, east and southern peninsula, where they are likely to be above normal.

However, above-normal minimum temperatures are likely over northeast India, many parts of southern peninsular India and some parts of northwest, east and central India, the IMD said.
