SC ex-judge named NHRC chairperson
A retired Supreme Court judge, Justice V Ramasubramanian, has been appointed as the new chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission. The post had been lying vacant since June this year.
The President also appointed Priyank Kanoongo and Justice Bidyut Ranjan Sarangi (retd) as the members of the NHRC.
A high-power committee led by PM Narendra Modi had met on December 18 to select the chairperson. Both Leaders of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi also attended the meeting.
On June 22, 2019, Justice Ramasubramanian was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and later, on September 23, 2019, he was elevated to the Supreme Court.
