Supreme Court notice to Centre on decision not to conduct NEET-SS exam

The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Centre, Medical Counselling Committee and the National Medical Commission (NMC) to respond to a petition challenging the NMC’s decision not to conduct NEET-Super Speciality examination in 2024.

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Super Speciality (NEET-SS) is meant for doctors having postgraduate degrees like MD, MS and DNB, or an equivalent qualification seeking admission to super-speciality courses.

A lawyer representing Rahul Balwan and 12 other NEET-SS aspirants told a Bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud that the NMC had decided to not hold the NEET-SS exam this year and it was likely to be held in January 2025.

The Bench listed the case for hearing on July 26. Issuing notices to the Centre, Medical Counselling Committee and the NMC, the Bench gave liberty to the petitioners to make NBE (National Board of Examinations) a party to the petition.

Citing an earlier judgement, the petitioners said NEET-SS has to be held every year and the time schedule had already been fixed by the top court for admission to super-speciality courses.
