In a chilling double murder, a man strangled his mother and her alleged lover at Sikanderpur village of Sirsa late Thursday night, police said. The suspect drove the bodies to the police station and turned himself in.

The incident occurred around 2 am when Lekhraj, alias Lekhu, 48, a neighbour of Angoori Devi, 47, visited her home. Angoori’s son Raj Kumar (30), a pickup truck driver, reportedly caught them together and used a dupatta (scarf) to strangulate the two.

After the killings, Raj Kumar placed their bodies in his truck and drove nearly 7 km to the Sadar police station. A police officer at the scene said Raj Kumar told them: “I want you to file an FIR. I have killed my mother and her lover; they had an illicit relationship. Their bodies are in my vehicle.”

The police took him into custody and dispatched teams to the crime scene. The bodies have been sent for a post-mortem examination and further investigations are on.

Angoori’s mother Sugri told the police that her daughter had been in a relationship with Lekhraj for nearly 15 years, despite objections from her family. “Raj Kumar and his father had often warned her that the relationship was destroying the family. Several family panchayats had been held to resolve the matter, but the couple refused to separate,” she said. Sugri added that Angoori’s husband, Pala Ram, had tried to convince her to follow social norms, but to no avail. The police said Raj Kumar, married with three children, committed the crime while his wife and children were home. A quarrel broke out after the neighbour arrived, leading to the attack.

Officers noted that Raj Kumar appeared calm when he reached the police station. He reportedly took tea and answered questions without showing any visible signs of remorse.

Authorities said Raj Kumar told them that his mother’s actions had brought “shame” to his family in the village, and that he had taken the extreme step to “protect the family’s honour”. Villagers were in a state of shock following the killings, locals said.
